Newcastle United’s stellar performers this season have largely gone under the radar, with the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and skipper Jamaal Lascelles being continuously overlooked by Gareth Southgate and the England set-up.

Many fans have urged the Three Lions boss to select the duo, particularly Lascelles, but the former Nottingham Forest man has found himself behind the likes of Burnley’s James Tarkowski, Leicester’s Harry Maguire and Swansea’s Alfie Mawson- all of whom have earned recent call-ups.

That trio are battling to secure a spot alongside Manchester City’s John Stones at the heart of defence for this summer’s World Cup but Newcastle legend Micky Quinn believes Lascelles is better than the lot- including £47.5m man Stones.

Writing in his column for The Evening Chroniclehe said:

“It actually really frustrates me that Lascelles keeps being overlooked by Gareth Southgate for England. He is easily among the best five English centre-backs at the moment – in fact, I’d have him in the squad ahead of John Stones. I really would.”

24-year-old Lascelles has been ever present for Newcastle this season, starting 25 Premier League matches.
