Newcastle United fans will have enjoyed the weekend after victory against Arsenal all but secures the club’s Premier League status, whilst they’ll also be pleased by casting their eye towards the Championship where arch-rivals Sunderland look set for a second relegation in a row.

The Daily MailĀ claims Newcastle could benefit from Sunderland’s drop to League One directly as the Magpies are looking to snatch the signatures of Joel Asoro and Josh Maya from the clutches of their bitter rivals.

Newcastle are in the process of a complete overhaul to their youth ranks and have been eyeing the pair for a number of months, regularly deploying scouts to keep tabs on the two teenage talents- though Arsenal and Everton are also keen.

Asoro, 18, and Maya, 19, are both out of contract at the Stadium of Light in the summer of 2019 but the Black Cats are keen for the pair to sign extended deals, although the possibility of a move to the Premier League could be difficult to turn down.

Whilst the pair have become mainstays of Chris Coleman’s side this season, and will be key-players in League One next term if they remain at the club, Sunderland face a stern battle to keep them.
