Newcastle United have stormed towards a top-half finish in the Premier League this season after a superb run of form saw them win four consecutive matches ahead of tonight’s clash with Everton.

The Magpies have been led valiantly by the performances of Spain ace Ayoze Perez, who has hit a run of form by scoring three goals in his last three appearances- putting him joint-top of Newcastle’s Premier League scoring charts this season alongside Dwight Gayle, with both netting five.

However, the man signed from Tenerife in 2014 could have seen his career take a completely different route a few years ago as he told The Shields Gazette he was ‘very close’ to sealing a move to Tottenham Hotspur, while also stating Manchester United held an interest.

“In the end it (a move to Tottenham) did not happen. It was a couple of seasons ago. Man United was more interest than anything else, but the Tottenham was pretty close.”

“In the end, it did not come to anything, but staying here was not negative. I enjoyed a lot in the second division. It made me improve in many ways, and I was happy.”

24-year-old Perez has seen interest in his services rise following his upturn in form, with Europa League chasing Real Betis attributed with a potential swoop this summer.
