Newcastle United’s fine run of form in recent weeks has seen the Magpies push ten points clear of the relegation zone, putting Rafael Benitez’s side on the brink of retaining their Premier League status.

The Tyneside giants are now just a few points short of reaching their pre-season 40-point target and will be full of confidence heading into this weekend, despite the daunting prospect of tackling Europa League semi-finalists Arsenal.

With the Gunners’ priorities this season now lying elsewhere, Arsene Wenger’s side could be there for the taking and former Arsenal defender Paul Merson believes the hosts will be able to secure a draw on Sunday afternoon.

Predicting a 2-2 draw for Sky SportsMerson said:

“Newcastle have been alright recently. They will give you chances but they will have a go while Arsenal will have had a long trip to Russia on Thursday.”

“Arsenal have not been great but they have won games recently, so credit where it is due. After a load of hard fixtures they have had easy fixtures and they have put those teams to bed at home. You can’t ask for much more. They have done well considering they were up against it.”
