Newcastle United’s victory over Arsenal on Sunday has seen the Magpies achieve their pre-season target of 40 points, all but securing the club’s top-flight status for another season.

That has eased the pressure on Tyneside heading into the final five games of the season but Rafael Benitez has issued his side with a new challenge, as he seeks to keep the foot on the gas and continue a fine run of form.

The Magpies have now won each of their last four league games, firing themselves clear of the relegation battle, and a top-half finish can now be secured- which would be a major success considering the financial restraints Benitez has had to deal with.

Speaking to Chronicle LiveBenitez has now challenged his side to focus on the next game but has rewarded the team with two days off.

“I think we are safe with 41 points. It’s a massive achievement for the players, the city and the fans. I want to congratulate everyone.”

“Today we didn’t play amazing football because we played an amazing team but you have to manage how you play and compete for the win. We can enjoy the win now but then we have to be ready for the next game.”

Newcastle’s Premier League finale continues next weekend with a trip to face Everton, before tackling West Brom, Watford, Tottenham and Chelsea.
