Three key changes Rafa Benitez must make to his Newcastle team for Southampton

|

Ayoze Perez for Christian Atsu

Perez is the ultimate marmite player amongst supporters, but the Spaniard is trusted by fellow countryman Benitez and is considered by the United boss as the most effective number 10 currently at his disposal, appreciating his work-rate and shrewd positional sense in both offensively and defensively.

The 24-year-old has shown intermittent flashes of his ability this season and scored Newcastle’s second goal in the 2-2 draw with Southampton at St Mary’s in October. His meagre return of four goals in 25 appearances isn’t exactly impressive for a player in his position, but United seem to play better when Perez is on the field and he will be fresh after dropping to the bench against Liverpool last week.

Christian Atsu started in his place only for the Ghana international to continue his poor form with an anonymous performance in Merseyside, and it would be no surprise to see Perez restored to the starting XI in his place this weekend.
