Three key changes Rafa Benitez must make to his Newcastle team for Southampton

|

Release the handbrake applied at Liverpool

Benitez has already admitted that Newcastle have to start attacking teams when they play at home – but whether the Magpies boss is prepared to release the handbrake against Southampton is unclear.

Function over form reigned at Anfield last week as Benitez set his side up in a 5-4-1 formation to limit the damage Liverpool could have inflicted on United’s goal difference, knowing that it could prove to be critical  in the battle to avoid relegation.

Pragmatism is hardwired into the Spaniard’s DNA, but goal difference alone won’t keep Newcastle in the Premier League and sooner or later Benitez needs ignore his protective instincts and give his players the freedom to play on the front-foot at St James’ Park.

John Bereseford called on Newcastle to “go for the jugular” when they kick off against a fragile Southampton side who’ve struggled on the road this season.

Benitez would be wise to heed that advice.
