Dwight Gayle has lauded the unity within the current Newcastle squad after Rafa Benitez’s side breezed past Southampton on Saturday.

St James’ Park was rocking at full time after the Magpies secured a comprehensive 3-0 victory over the beleaguered Saints, climbing up to 13th in the Premier League table and five points above the relegation zone.

Gayle played a prominent role in the win, sprinting 80 yards from his own penalty area to set up the second of Kenedy’s two goals, and believes the togetherness of the players and staff will see United over the line to safety.

“Everybody is just pulling in the same direction and everybody is focused on the main goal, which is to stay up. You can see that from everybody,” the 27-year-old told the Daily Mail.

“We scored three goals on Saturday and none of them came from the strikers, but we are all working hard and that’s a reflection of people pulling in the same direction.

“The defence was fantastic, as they have been for the last few months, and long may that continue.

“Hopefully we can keep pushing up the table and get to a position of safety. It was just important that we got the win and played really well. It was a fantastic day for everybody.’

Newcastle are now unbeaten in their last four home matches but must endure a three-week wait until their next game against Huddersfield on 31 March.
