Jonjo Shelvey could feature for Newcastle against Southampton on Saturday after Rafa Benitez provided an update on the condition of four injured players.

A knee injury sustained against Bournemouth a fortnight ago denied Shelvey the chance to play against former club Liverpool last weekend, but the 26-year-old could return for the visit of the Saints to St James’ Park albeit most likely as a substitute.

“Shelvey , who was a doubt, has been training, but we have to be careful with him and decide for tomorrow,” explained Benitez to the Chronicle during his pre-match press conference.

Benitez is still without Islam Slimani, however, who continues his rehabilitation from a thigh injury but could have recovered in time to make his United debut against Huddersfield in three weeks time. Goalkeeper Rob Elliot and defender Jesus Gamez also remain sidelined.

“I was talking with him two or three days ago, and was also speaking today,” the Magpies boss added.

“We don’t want to say that Huddersfield is the game for him, but in terms of time, maybe he will be okay for this game.

“We will have to wait and see. Slimani is still the same, Rob Elliot is not available and Gamez, the other players are fine.”
