Geordie striker Luke Charman could be in line for a new deal at Newcastle as the club begins to prepare its retained list for next season.

Charman has struck 11 times for the under-23 side this season and has caught the eye of senior staff who have been impressed with the 20-year-old’s performances despite the United second string struggling at the bottom of the second tier in Premier League 2.

It’s unclear how long Charman has remaining on his current deal, but the Chronicle are reporting that Newcastle are considering whether to offer the Sherburn Village-born goalscorer a new deal that would keep him at St James’ Park for the foreseeable future.

Charman continued his excellent form on Monday, scoring twice against Colchester United in a 3-0 victory that ensured the Under 23’s finished top of Group D and qualified for the last-16 of the Premier League Cup.

It’s understood that the futures of half-a-dozen fringe and academy players are currently up in the air with left-back Massadio Haidara, whose time at the club has been plagued by injury, the most high profile player whose contract expires in the summer.

Haidara, along with England youth goalkeeper Paul Woolston, injury prone Australian defender Curtis Good, centre-back Kyle Cameron and striker Tom Heardman, once tipped as the ‘next Andy Carroll’, could all be released at the end of the season.
