Newcastle would prefer to sell unwanted goalkeeper Matz Sels to an English club this summer at the end of his loan spell.

Sels moved to St James’ Park from Gent for £5million in the summer of 2016 and was quickly installed as number one by Rafa Benitez, but struggled to adapt to the physical nature of the Championship and made just nine league appearances before being replaced by Karl Darlow.

The 26-year-old was granted a return to his native Belgium in June when he joined Anderlecht on a season-long loan, quickly recovering from a shaky start to establish himself as first choice goalkeeper for the Jupiler Pro League champions.

Anderlecht are interested in keeping Sels on a permanent basis but Belgian outlet La Derniere Heure are reporting that Newcastle are keen to recoup what they spent on the 6ft 2in shot-stopper and would rather sell him to an English club in order to achieve that.

There is the small matter of Anderlecht being able to meet United’s asking price for Sels, having failed to pull the finances together in time to re-sign Aleksandar Mitrovic on loan during the January transfer window.

And there is likely to be scant interest in Sels amongst any club in England’s top two tiers who witnessed his struggles during that brief period between the posts for Newcastle.
