Newcastle United have struggled for stability this season and face a major test after the international break, as they seek to build upon their four-point advantage over the relegation zone and secure their Premier League status for another season.

Rafael Benitez has had to battle with restricted funds during his time at St. James’ Park but pulled off an impressive deal last year to bring Mikel Merino in from Borussia Dortmund, initially on-loan before making the deal permanent.

Decent performances from the Spanish U21 international have not gone unnoticed and Athletic Bilbao were linked with a move for the Basque-born midfielder in January, with it stated they still hold an interest.

Surprisingly, Spanish outlet AS, cited by SportsWitnesssuggest Newcastle will consider a sale of the young midfielder if their €15m valuation is met- and it’s something that fans will certainly not be happy with.

Athletic certainly have the funds to match that figure after selling Aymeric Laporte to Manchester City, which could be a cause of frustration for supporters.
