Newcastle sent club officials to monitor Garry Rodrigues in action for Galatasaray during the Istanbul derby clash with Fenerbache on Sunday

Turkish news outlet Fanatik confirmed that a delegation from United were in attendance at the Şükrü Saracoğlu to watch Cape Verde international Rodrigues play the full 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw.

It was reported last week that scouts have been monitoring the 27-year-old for some time, with Newcastle seeing an €8 million bid turned down by Galatasaray in January following failed efforts to sign Rodrigues last summer.

The Dutch-born winger has been superb all season for Fatih Terim’s side and Galatasaray president Mustafa Cengiz admitted recently that he would be receptive to offers in the region of €30m for one of his prized assets.

That means Rafa Benitez would have to break Newcastle’s transfer record to sign a player he clearly holds a significant interest in, with Turkish media expecting the United boss to try again for Rodrigues at the end of the current season.

Everton are also understood to be interested, meaning Benitez and Newcastle will face competition for the signature of Rodrigues.
