Newcastle United have work to do this summer if they’re to enjoy a more stable season next term and Rafael Benitez has long been linked with the signature of a new goalkeeper.

The Magpies signed Martin Dubravka on-loan in January but could opt to pursue a new target at the end of the season, with The Scotsman claiming Newcastle are involved in a fierce chase for an experienced stopper.

According to reports, Newcastle are battling Southampton, Stoke City, Napoli and Celtic for the services of Liverpool’s Belgian international Simon Mignolet, who wants to leave this summer after becoming back-up to Loris Karius.

The 30-year-old is likely to jet to the World Cup this summer with Belgium and, at his age, has no interest in sitting on the bench every week and is pursuing a new venture- which could see the former Sunderland stopper return to the North East.

However, Mignolet’s relationship with former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers makes Celtic the favourites for his services and the fact that they could also offer Champions League football would be a significant lure.
