Four things for Rafa Benitez to ponder before Newcastle play Southampton

|

Cut the cord of conservatism and attack?

Beating Manchester United has raised the expectation in terms of performance levels at St James’ Park and Benitez has already stated that Newcastle will set up to attack teams in their five remaining home fixtures – and the Magpies will start against Southampton on Saturday. Supporters will expect to see a repeat of the intensity displayed in the dispatching of the Red Devils but with a heavier focus on attacking the Saints from the first whistle.

Benitez has been accused of adopting an overly pragmatic approach on home turf that has ultimately cost Newcastle points in games they realistically should have won. Swansea and Brighton instantly spring to mind and the United boss now seems mindful of the fact that his side can’t afford to drop more points with a maximum of 15 left to play for on Tyneside. It all points to the Spaniard cutting the cord on his conservative habits and allow his players the freedom to attack Southampton, a team that has managed just two wins on the road all season, from the first whistle and kill the game off before retreating into a protective defensive shape.

Victory would set the Magpies up nicely for the clash with Huddersfield three weeks later.
