The Three key Newcastle players who’ve improved their form in 2018

|

Paul Dummett

It’s no coincidence that Dummet’s return to the side following a lengthy injury lay-off has resulted in an upturn in form for Newcastle. The Geordie left-back is often maligned by supporters for lacking the attacking attributes required by modern full-backs, but he is well-liked and, most importantly, heavily trusted by Rafa Benitez to fulfil the first duty of a defender; to defend.

Despite his limited technical ability, Dummett brings balance to Newcastle’s back four and the improvement in United’s defensive record in light of his comeback after a hamstring injury only serves to illustrate his importance. In the nine games prior to Dummett’s comeback Newcastle had conceded 20 goals compared to eight in the same number of matches. The 26-year-old doesn’t exactly conform to type but his diligent defensive work has marked him out as one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League in recent weeks. Just ask Anthony Martial, who left St James’ Park with precious little change to show from his duel with Dummett in Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
