Martin Dubravka is eager to extend his stay at Newcastle beyond this season and become a ‘hero’ at the club following an impressive start to his loan spell.

The Slovakia international goalkeeper has excelled in both of his appearances for the Magpies, keeping a clean sheet on his debut against Manchester United and making several crucial saves in the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Despite conceding two late goals at the Vitality Stadium, the 29-year-old earned praise once again for another assured display following his deadline day loan switch from Sparta Prague.

And Dubravka revealed that he is desperate to remain at St James’ Park on a permanent basis in order to become an idol at one of the biggest clubs in his homeland.

“I hope I’ll stay. It’s amazing here. Everybody in Slovakia knows about Newcastle; it’s a big name in my country,” he is reported as saying by the Chronicle.

“I know many people talk about the top six in England but, in Slovakia, Newcastle’s one of the most famous clubs.

“Everyone wants to be a hero of a club like Newcastle but I have to take this step by step. If you think things are going to go well, then they won’t.”

Rafa Benitez reportedly has the option to sign Dubravka permanently at the end of the season at a cost of only £3.5 million, and may be tempted to do so after Slovakian cemented himself as Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper
