Nicolai Jorgensen has hinted that he could move to Newcastle from Feyenoord once the transfer window reopens in the summer, admitting that he “ready to take the next step” in his career.

The Denmark international was identified by Rafa Benitez as the striker to fire his side to Premier League safety and the United boss was expecting the club to spend at least a club record £20 million to secure Jorgensen’s signature.

However, the Magpies saw two paltry bids rebuffed by Feyenoord and opted instead to sign Islam Slimani on loan from Leicester on deadline day.

Seven goals in 15 starts this season illustrates why Benitez made Jorgensen his number one target and the 27-year-old hasn’t closed the door on a potential move to St James’ Park at the end of the season.

“It was more of a matter for my agent and the club, you hear a lot, try to focus, but you’re also a bit confused,” The Chronicle report Jorgensen as saying during an interview with Dutch outlet NOS.

“As long as I am here, I give everything, I am happy here and I am proud to play for Feyenoord, and when the day comes, it is apparently the right time.

“It’s a dream for every footballer to play in the Premier League, if I keep working hard, there will be a club, I can also compete in another league, I think I’m ready for a next step, but now I’m at Feyenoord.”
