Anderlecht are keen to sign Matz Sels on a permanent deal from Newcastle following a run of impressive form from the loanee goalkeeper.

Sels has recovered well from difficult start to season and has emerged as a key player for Anderlecht in recent months, illustrating why Rafa Benitez brought him to St James’ Park in the first place.

According to Belgian media outlet DH, it is understood that Anderlecht are now keen to bring the 25-year-old, who is yet to make his international debut for Belgium, to the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium on a permanent basis.

That would certainly kill two birds with one stone for Benitez, whose arrival in a £5 million switch from Gent quickly turned sour after he was swiftly identified as a weak link by the Magpies boss after just nine Championship appearances.

Issues with commanding his penalty area and claiming crosses saw Sels replaced by Karl Darlow as number one in September and he didn’t make another league appearance all season.

Attempts to sell him last summer proved frustrating for Benitez and the Spaniard will hope that Sels maintains his run of excellent form in order to push through a move to Anderlecht when the transfer window reopens.

Should that not happen, and with Martin Dubravka expected to sign permanently from Sparta Prague, Sels could return to St James’ Park as fifth choice keeper.
