The agent of Nicolai Jorgensen has confirmed that Newcastle ‘did a lot’ to try and secure the signing of the Feyenoord striker in January.

Jorgensen headed a list of attacking targets compiled by Rafa Benitez and the Magpies’ scouting department, only for United to see two offers rejected for the Denmark international. The second bid, which was reported to be £15 million, fell way below Feyenoord’s £20 million asking price.

The 27-year-old’s agent, Mikkel Nissen, did confirm to Danish media outlet Ekstra Bladet that Newcastle pushed hard to make the move happen despite interest from several unnamed Premier League clubs.

“I can confirm that Newcastle specifically wanted to have him and did a lot to make it successful,” Nissen stated.

“There were also other Premier League clubs in play, but Newcastle was the most daring.

Unfortunately for Newcastle and Benitez, Nissen also revealed that Feyenoord had no intention of allowing his client to leave during the January transfer window but could look to sell him in the summer.

He added: “But Feyenoord was against it [the move]. They just didn’t want to sell him in this transfer window and will look at it this summer.”

That looks a distinct possibility after Jorgensen has hinted earlier this week that he is open to moving to England at the end of the season.
