Reports in Italy have credited Newcastle as being interested in signing Italy and Bologna striker Mattia Destro.

Rafa Benitez is likely to be in the market for attacking reinforcements when the summer transfer window opens and rumours suggest the United boss is a fan of Destro, who has managed five goals and three assists in 20 games this season.

The 26-year-old has had spells at Roma, AC Milan, Genoa and AC Siena and Benitez is fully aware of his talents having managed in Serie A at Inter and Napoli before taking up the reins at St James’ Park.

And Italian media outlet Il Resto del Carino, as reported by The Chronicle, propose that Newcastle will rival fellow Premier League club Watford and Deportivo for Destro’s signature, whose time at Bologna looks to be reaching its end.

Despite his obvious talents, the eight-cap Italy international’s disciplinary issues have seen him fall foul of manager Roberto Donadoni who dropped Destro for the recent defeat to his former club Inter.

Benitez has already dealt with his fair share of misbehaviour in just under two years on Tyneside, primarily from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Jonjo Shelvey, and it may be that his tolerance for ill-discipline that he won’t countenance adding another potential troublemaker to his squad.
