Aleksandar Mitrovic is targeting promotion to the Premier League and a spot in Serbia’s World Cup squad before he returns to Newcastle in the summer.

Two goals in as many games have endeared Mitrovic to Fulham supporters and the 23-year-old is clearly relishing the chance to play at Craven Cottage under fellow Serb Slavisa Jokanovic after being frozen out at Newcastle by manager Rafa Benitez.

A stunning 20-yard strike in the 2-0 victory over Championship leaders Wolves increased in-form Fulham’s chances of promotion and Mitrovic is hopeful of scoring the goals that will fire his new side back into the top-flight and secure a seat on the plane to Russia.

“My first target is to get promoted with Fulham directly first, if we can, the second thing is the World Cup,” he told Get West London.

“I will leave World Cup until the end of the season, but at the moment I’m really focused with Fulham, the team and my game and try improve in training and help the team every game I can.

“It’s a good feeling to be here and I am looking forward to every game and I want to play and get on the pitch, this is the reason I’m here.

“I think Fulham needs me and I need Fulham, we both need each other and I’m really happy.”

Mitrovic’s future at St James’ Park will be reassessed when he returns to Newcastle in the summer with Benitez expected to try and offload the striker on a permanent basis.
