Newcastle were among 22 clubs to send scouts and officials to Portugal on Wednesday to watch the Champions League tie between Porto and Liverpool.

According to Portuguese media outlet O Bola, Rafa Benitez had dispatched a member of his scouting team to run the rule over an unidentified target, understood to be a Porto player, during the last-16 clash at the Estádio do Dragão where the hosts were thrashed 5-0 by Liverpool.

But this isn’t the first time United officials have observed a Porto match this season, with O Bola claiming representatives from the Magpies have been present at Cup games this season.

It seems to indicate that Benitez has his eye on one Porto player at least and have been linked with former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas and striker Vincent Aboubakar in the past, although neither featured in the defeat to Liverpool.

Scouts from fellow Premier League sides Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Leicester, Manchester City, Manchester United and Watford were also present, although who they were all watching remains a mystery.
