Newcastle United endured a testing period during January, where funds were limited by Mike Ashley yet again and Rafael Benitez was instead forced to exploit the loan market.

The Spaniard was certainly determined to improve his side though and landed Kenedy, Islam Slimani and Martin Dubravka on-loan for the remainder of the season- although his list of targets included other players.

According to The Daily MirrorBenitez tried to bring in Joe Hart on-loan from Manchester City but could not get West Ham to agree to end their own deal prematurely, with David Moyes adamant the 30-year-old still has a part to play in his side.

Hart has lost his first-team spot to Adrian over the past month and an early exit from the FA Cup means his opportunities are likely to continue being limited for the remainder of the season, though the stopper is desperate for more action to bolster his chances of starting for the Three Lions in this summer’s World Cup.

He would have got that experience at Newcastle but the Magpies instead turned their attention towards Martin Dubravka, who had a solid debut in Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
