Newcastle are reportedly in talks to sign exciting NK Lokomotiva Zagreb playmaker Lovro Majer – a player christened as the ‘Messi of the Balkans’.

The 20-year-old is emerging as one of the most highly coveted young talents in Europe after making his international debut for Croatia in 2017, with Sampdoria, Celtic and Everton rumoured to be interested.

But the Calciomercato report that Newcastle are one of a handful of clubs are in talks to sign Majer, who has been likened to Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and could be viewed as a long-term occupant of the number ten position that Rafa Benitez is desperate to strengthen.

The Italian media outlet claim that United had been in discussions with Lokomotiva and negotiated a deal between €15-18 million for Majer only for it to breakdown after failing to agree unspecified terms related to the transfer.

It’s understood that Newcastle may return in the summer with a fresh offer to rival that of Sampdoria, who also reportedly weighing up a bid.
