Newcastle had a £7 million offer for Cape Verde international Garry Rodrigues turned down by Galatasaray in January.

Gunes report that the Magpies were keen to sign Dutch born winger Rodrigues, who can operate on either flank, in last month’s transfer window after becoming to alerted to his excellent form for Galatasaray where he has accrued six assists in 16 games in the Turkish Super Lig this season.

This is understood to be the second time Newcastle have contacted the Istanbul club about the 27-year-old, with Turkish Football reporting in September that a £6m bid from United was rejected in the summer.

Galatasaray had already seen one key player depart the Türk Telecom Stadium after Badou NDiaye completed a £14m switch to Stoke City, so it’s understandable that experienced manager Fatih Terim was reluctant to allow Rodrigues to follow his teammate to the Premier League.

Newcastle did eventually complete a loan deal for Chelsea fringe player Kenedy, who has enjoyed a superb start to life at St James’ Park.
