Newcastle could yet revive their interest in Viktoria Plzen forward Michael Krmencik when the summer transfer window opens.

The Chronicle have suggested that Rafa Benitez’s scouting network have continued to keep tabs on Krmencik, who has been described as a ‘left-field’ target, and saw him register an assist during the 1-1 draw with Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League last week.

That was Krmencik’s first competitive action since early December after the Czech First League took a mid-winter break, before which the 24-year-old had scored 11 goals in 14 games to propel Viktoria to the top of the table and a 17-match unbeaten run.

It’s understood that Benitez considered moving for Krmencik as an alternative to principal target Nicolai Jorgensen, another striker the Spaniard could potentially target again in the summer, and the Czech forward may yet feature on the United boss’ recruitment list.

Whether Benitez decides to firm up his interest in the Czech international, who has six goals in 10 appearances for his country, won’t become clear until the transfer window re-opens.
