Newcastle United are set for an extremely busy period during the January transfer window and a huge battle could emerge in the chase for one defender’s signature.
The Sun states that defending Scottish champions Celtic and their Belgian counterparts Anderlecht are battling to secure the services of Newcastle United outcast Chancel Mbemba, who could be free to leave this month.
Captain of DR Congo, Mbemba was a crucial part of the Newcastle side that won the Championship last season but has fallen out of favour at St. James’ Park this season, making just 10 appearances thus far.
The 23-year-old is tied to the Magpies until 2020 but Rafael Benitez could sanction a sale this month to raise funds for his own January additions, with the Spaniard chasing a number of defensive targets to shore up his frail back-line.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is keen on bringing him North of the border this month whilst Anderlecht, who sold him to Newcastle for £8m in 2015, are looking to bring him back as they plot a spending spree this window following the arrival of a wealthy new owner.
