Newcastle United have been handed a huge boost in their quest to sign a Premier League striker, with reports stating that the proposed deal will happen as the other club involved are prepared to come to a deal.

Rafael Benitez has reportedly made Watford captain Troy Deeney his prime striking target for the January transfer window as he seeks to provide consistency to an attacking line that has netted just 20 times in 22 games this season.

Deeney has struggled to remain as Watford’s leading man this season following the club-record signing of Andre Gray from Burnley and The Daily Mail states the Hornets are open to a sale, though their reported price-tag of £20m could prove to be problematic.

However, an additional boost is provided with the news that Watford are eying Bournemouth misfit Benik Afobe as a replacement for the experienced striker, which increases the likelihood of the Hornets agreeing to a deal.

The former Arsenal man has struggled for playing time with the Cherries this season, finding himself below Jermain Defoe, Calum Wilson and Joshua King in the pecking order.
