Newcastle United have made it very clear that they’re seeking the addition of a new goalkeeper during the January transfer window but Rafael Benitez has so far cast his eye across Europe.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Kevin Trapp and Napoli’s Pepe Reina are amongst the high-profile names linked with a move to St. James’ Park, though it’s since become clear that neither of those proposed deals are likely to go around.

Benitez therefore finds himself back at square one but a different approach should be made, shifting attention on recruitment away from Europe and instead eyeing players from within the Premier League- and the World Cup at the end of the season is the perfect carrot for Newcastle to dangle.

Manchester United’s Sergio Romero is the perfect player for Newcastle to swoop for due to this, as the Argentine will find it impossible to dethrone David De Gea at Old Trafford and, as a result, may see his chances of standing between the sticks for Argentina this summer take a hit.

The 30-year-old is entering his prime years as a goalkeeper but doesn’t have the opportunities at Manchester United to back that up, as he’s yet to feature in the Premier League this season and has seen three of his appearances come in the League Cup.

With United’s involvement in that tournament over, Romero’s first-team opportunities are set to take a further hit and the Red Devils may struggle to retain the services of the South American goalkeeper if Newcastle were to offer first-team football.

An approach from the Magpies would likely be on-loan, due to the finances that Manchester United and the player would command for a permanent move, but that too could work well for Newcastle, as they wouldn’t have the commitment that could prove to be problematic at the end of the season.
