Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is desperate to improve his ranks during the January transfer window, as he seeks to retain the side’s Premier League status.

The Magpies have struggled for consistency since returning to the top-flight this season and Benitez is having to cope with the ongoing takeover talk on Tyneside, which risks restricting his activity during this month’s window.

Benitez is a master of the arts though and is ready for an active window this month, regarding both incoming and outgoing deals, and one area of improvement he’s focusing on his between the sticks- seeking an upgrade on current senior pair Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow.

The Daily MailĀ states the Spaniard has now eyed a new target after unsuccessfully trying to lure German international Kevin Trapp to the club from Paris Saint-Germain, with Newcastle now pursuing Slovakian stopperĀ Martin Dubravka.

28-year-old Dubravka, who only joined current outfit Sparta Prague this summer, is now seen as the ideal choice for Newcastle and wouldn’t prove to be too costly a recruit- although he’s hardly a big name like Trapp or another reported target Kiko Casilla.
