Newcastle United are desperate to bolster their attacking options this month and it’s being reported that a significant approach has been made towards a deal to sign a Premier League striker.

The Northern Echo states that Rafael Benitez has approached his former side Liverpool to enquire about a January deal for Daniel Sturridge, who has started just five Premier League matches this season and wants first-team football to aid his quest to push into Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Sturridge is widely reported to be available in January, with ESPN recently stating that Liverpool are ready to approve a departure this month- although they will not allow an exit for another Newcastle target, Danny Ings.

With a World Cup on the horizon, Sturridge is desperate to get his career back-on-track after a difficult period where he’s struggled with injury problems and a lack of form- as well as seeing the likes of Roberto Firmino and Dominic Solanke move ahead of him in the pecking order.

Newcastle have scored just 20 times in 22 Premier League games this season and are chasing significant upgrades to their attacking ranks, which Sturridge would certainly provide.
