Newcastle United face a stern battle in the January transfer market, not only to secure the additions of new faces but also to retain the services of players already within their squad.

The Chronicle claims that West Ham are expressing an interest in signing Newcastle’s Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu, having previously been attributed with an interest in midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

David Moyes’ high-spending Hammers have struggled this season, facing the risk of relegation like Newcastle, but the East London side have the finances to splash the cash, whereas their counterparts on Tyneside are not blessed with that benefit.

Newcastle will almost certainly rebuff interest in Atsu’s services, as he remains a key-player at St. James’ Park, but the concern will be if the winger’s head is turned- although Newcastle can expect a high price if he does force a move.

Rafael Benitez’s priority though will be to ensure key players like Atsu are committed to the club and are not lured away by rival sides, particularly those battling alongside Newcastle to avoid relegation.
