Newcastle United face a battle to ensure their side is competitive for the remainder of the season and discussions regarding outgoing deals are likely to be just as important as incoming signings.
The Magpies look set to have to fend off interest in a number of players at St. James’ Park, with The Daily Mail reporting West Ham are hopeful of tying up a deal for England international Jonjo Shelvey this month.
Shelvey, who scored Newcastle’s third goal in the FA Cup third round victory over League Two leaders Luton Town last weekend, has been in-and-out of the side this season and Newcastle may be tempted into a deal as they look to raise funds for their own January activity.
However, Rafael Benitez is determined not to approve the departure of players to fellow Premier League sides, particularly those who are fighting alongside Newcastle to avoid relegation, and it’s highly unlikely that a club from outside England will make a move.
Despite Newcastle’s stance, it will be interesting to see if their position changes should a lucrative move for Shelvey come in- as the England ace isn’t established as a key player at the club.
