It’s been a difficult period for Newcastle United and the reports emerging from Tyneside yesterday were particularly concerning, as it suggests a breakdown in negotiations regarding a takeover.

Amanda Staveley and PCP have long been in discussions with current Newcastle owner Mike Ashley regarding a deal for the Premier League side but the latter has not seen his demands met, which means a conclusion to talks is nowhere near close.

However, there is positive news for Rafael Benitez as The Telegraph reports Ashley is set to green light to strengthen his side in the January transfer market- with Newcastle seeking to keep their head above water in the second half of the season.

Ashley needs to spend to improve the side from his own perspective, as the value of the club would decrease dramatically if relegation were to occur this season- and that’s certainly a danger, with the Magpies just three points above the drop-zone.

Benitez is looking to land a new goalkeeper and a reliable striker this month, improving the side at both ends of the field.
