Newcastle United continue to face struggles in the January transfer market as the Magpies desperately trying to bolster their ranks ahead of their battle against relegation.

Rafael Benitez’s side are just two points from safety after 23 matches played and face a crucial period ahead, with matches against fellow strugglers Bournemouth and Crystal Palace coming alongside stern tests against Manchester United and Liverpool.

Scoring just 22 times so far this season, Benitez is desperate for a new striker to provide consistency in front of goal and The Northern Echo has named the three-man striking short-list that Benitez has issued to Newcastle’s hierarchy.

Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro, Leicester City’s Islam Slimani and Liverpool’s Danny Ings are the three players he’s eyeing but the Magpies are set for difficulties in each of those battles, looking likely to miss out.

Spanish giants Atletico want big money for Gameiro, which Newcastle cannot afford, and Tottenham lead the chase should a loan deal become available. Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp doesn’t want to lose Ings.

Finally, Slimani is also poised to leave this month but Leicester want a permanent sale, something that Newcastle are again unable to afford, and a move to Besiktas seems to be the most likely.
