Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is determined to bolster his forward line during the January transfer window, after seeing his side score just 20 goals in 22 matches so far.

The Magpies have spent recent months flirting with the relegation spots and run the risk of an immediate return to the Championship unless they can turn things around- which increases the pressure on the club, particularly amidst continued takeover talk.

Benitez is continuing with his work behind the scenes though and is desperate to land a forward with Premier League experience this month- although it’s reported his advances to sign a player surplus to requirements from a relegation rival have fallen on deaf ears.

The SunĀ claims that the Magpies made an approach to sign Diafra Sakho from West Ham United but were rebuffed in their advances, with the Senegalese striker more likely to rejoin former boss Sam Allardyce at Everton.

Newcastle were keen on a loan for the 28-year-old but Sakho’s relationship with Allardyce risks leaving them left in the dark- and it could mean they miss out on another striking target to the Toffees, who signed Cenk Tosun from Besiktas last week.
