Newcastle United’s quest to bolster their ranks with a highly-rated young striker is set to end in disappointment, as the player in question looks to be joining a Championship side.
TeamTalk states that Preston North End are set to emerge successful in their quest to land Hartlepool United striker Connor Simpson, beating a host of Premier League clubs in the chase to secure the non-league talent’s signature.
Newcastle, along with the likes of West Ham, Everton and Celtic, were reportedly eyeing the 17-year-old but Preston are on the verge of a major coup to land the teenager’s services.
Turning 18 this month, Simpson may well begin his career in Lancashire in the youth set-up but it’s clear his chances of first-team football are better in the Championship with Preston than they would be with a Premier League side.
It does hand Rafael Benitez a blow in the market, although Simpson was unlikely to be the marquee signing the Magpies need to rejuvenate their struggling forward ranks.
