Newcastle United’s quest to improve their ranks in January has taken a big twist, with reports suggesting the Magpies are eyeing a defensive addition.

Rafael Benitez’s side have widely been linked to a signing on the left-side of their back line but the Spaniard has other options within his sights, now reportedly eyeing a move for a full-back to play on the opposing flank.

Il Tempo claim that Newcastle have lodged an enquiry to Serie A giants Roma for the services of Brazilian defender Bruno Peres, who was linked with Bayern Munich in the past, amidst suggestions the Italian side could cash in.

The 27-year-old has started just six Serie A matches this term and Roma are considering a departure if their asking price of £8m is matched- although Newcastle’s fellow strugglers West Ham are also keen on his services.

With Newcastle already having DeAndre Yedlin and Javi Manquillo as options on the right, signing a player in this area is extremely unlikely to be a priority for Benitez in January.
