Newcastle United are set for a crucial period this month as they battle to maintain their Premier League status and avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is keen to rejuvenate his squad for the battle that lies ahead and crucial decisions are being made regarding a number of players within the squad, with outgoing deals poised to go ahead to raise funds for Benitez’s January spending.

The Daily MirrorĀ states the Magpies have informed Jack Colback and Jamie Sterry that they’re surplus to requirements and are able to leave this month, with the former widely linked with a return to former club Sunderland.

Colback has been frozen out on Tyneside but is reluctant to move his family away from the North East, limiting his options, and his wage demands are an issue for a Sunderland side who are struggling in the Championship.

Young Sterry, meanwhile, has found first-team football difficult to come by this season but featured in the Championship winning campaign last term- and he’s likely to return to the second-tier this month on-loan.
