Newcastle United remain active in the January transfer window as they seek further additions to bolster their side ahead of the remainder of the Premier League season.

The Magpies have so far only added Brazilian starlet Kenedy to their ranks on-loan from Chelsea and Rafael Benitez is seeking at least two more recruits- and it appears a highly-rated defender is on his short-list.

Reports cited by The Bristol Post claim Newcastle are one of four Premier League sides interested in the services of Bristol City defender Joe Bryan, with Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton also attributed with interest.

The 24-year-old full-back, who can also play out wide on the left, is valued at around £7m and Newcastle could make a swoop before the window closes on Wednesday, as Benitez seeks to improve his options down the left side.

Kenedy’s arrival from Chelsea gives Newcastle a boost further forward but it appears that Bryan is being targeted to provide cover at left-back, which has been a problem area for the Magpies ever since they returned to the Premier League.

However, the battle to secure Bryan’s signature is fierce and Newcastle could face a wealth of competition if they enter the market.
