Newcastle United face a crucial final week of the January transfer window as they seek deals to improve their situation in a fierce relegation battle.

The Magpies have struggled to find consistency this season and sit just a single point above the relegation zone after 23 matches played, heading into a crucial period of the season due to upcoming games against Burnley, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

Rafael Benitez’s biggest problem has been in front of goal, where his side have found the net just 22 times in 23 games, and the Spaniard is desperate to sign a consistent striker in the mid-season market, which has seen them into a fierce race.

The Daily MirrorĀ claims Newcastle are rivalling fellow strugglers Crystal Palace, Southampton and Swansea for the signature of Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro.

French striker Gameiro has found himself out of the picture in the Spanish capital after the return of Diego Costa from Chelsea and he’s seeking to revitalise his career with a move, which could see him come to the Premier League.

The clinical 30-year-old is the ideal prospect for Newcastle to sign this month but, with finances restricted, they may become disappointed in their chase.
