Newcastle midfielder Mikel Merino has said he believes Rafael Benitez’s squad is ‘perfect’ for the Premier League despite their poor run of form that has seen them drop 12 places in the league.

The Magpies were as high as fourth place in mid-October, but after six losses in seven games – their most recent defeat coming against Leicester City at the weekend – they currently sit 16th in the Premier League.

Despite the club’s awful form however, Merino believes that the players have more than enough ability to succeed in England’s top division.

“Our squad is perfect for Premier League. All the players here are capable. I believe in each one and that this team is a great team,” he said, as reported by the Chronicle.

“We know we have lost again, and we are not going through a good period, but we have to make sure we don’t lose our minds.”

Newcastle face Everton on Wednesday as they look for their first win in almost two months.
