Newcastle United continue to find themselves in a period of uncertainty, with takeover talks rumbling on behind the scenes as the Magpies look to save themselves from the threat of an immediate return to the Championship.

A series of eight losses in nine games has seen the Tyneside giants plummet down the Premier League standings and into the relegation zone, with the Magpies short of their mid-season target of 20 points as they approach the halfway mark in the season.

The general consensus is that Newcastle lack the quality to compete in the Premier League, after owner Mike Ashley was tight with his budget in the summer, so the news that a potential new owner is ready to splash the cash is a huge boost.

The Daily Mirror states that Amanda Staveley is ready to increase Rafael Benitez’s January spending budget to £40m, should she take over, which would allow the Spanish manager to get the two or three signings he’s seeking.

That budget would allow Newcastle to negotiate for permanent deals as well as looking at short-term loans, which would make more targets available, though it remains to be seen if a deal goes ahead before the New Year as time is seriously running short.
