Newcastle United face a stern test to improve their disastrous form in the months ahead, following a run of eight defeats in nine matches that has seen the Magpies slip into the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Rafael Benitez is determined to improve his side’s form in January but faces difficulties due to the ongoing takeover talks, which have led to a huge period of uncertainty and there seems to be no signs of an imminent conclusion.

That has led to concerns heading into the January transfer window, where Benitez is keen to bolster his forward lines. Besiktas’ Cenk Tosun is widely reported to be a prime target but the Magpies face stern competition in the market for his signature.

One of those rivals is from within the Premier League, where fellow relegation threatened side Crystal Palace are also keen- and Eagles manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed the South London side’s interest in the Turkish striker.

Speaking to Sky SportsHodgson confirmed that Crystal Palace have been tracking the striker.

“I know him, he plays in the Champions League. The club have watched him, yes. I don’t think there’s been any further contact between the clubs, I’d be surprised if that’s the case.”

“At the moment I have no information whatsoever that we are going to sign Cenk Tosun so if tomorrow the chairman says to me I’ve got you a player, Cenk Tosun, I shall be as surprised as you are.”
