Newcastle United have been handed a boost in their quest to sign a midfielder who is attracting a lot of interest, with the selling party seemingly closing in on a replacement.

Somerset Live report Bristol City are closing in on the signature of Liam Walsh in a £1m deal, which could prove to stand as a replacement for midfielder Josh Brownhill- with Newcastle amongst the side’s interested in the 21-year-old.

Brownhill has been linked with Premier League sides including Bournemouth, Burnley and Leicester, as well as Championship pair Leeds United and Derby County.

His current contract is due to expire in the summer, although the Robins possess an option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, but could accept a sale in the New Year with Walsh potentially coming into their side.

Bristol City will demand a high price for the young midfielder’s services though as they seek to earn promotion to the Premier League for the first-time, with the club currently sitting third in the Championship- four points off the automatic promotion spots.
