Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is keen to bolster his squad in January and seems to be eyeing defensive additions.

The Magpies have suffered a huge dip in form in recent weeks but fought back from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw with West Brom in midweek, a result that brought an end to the run of four consecutive defeats.

With takeover talks ongoing, Benitez and his team are eyeing the right additions to improve the side ahead of their battle to retain their Premier League status and it’s understood they’ve made approaches to sign an England international.

The Sun states Newcastle United enquired about the services of Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw but were put off by his £20m valuation, a figure that would see the defender become the club’s all-time most expensive signing.

Shaw has declined over the past three years, struggling with injuries and a loss of form, but Jose Mourinho is keen to avoid a loss on the player signed after the 2014 World Cup by Louis Van Gaal.
