Newcastle United have been linked with a shock January move for Chelsea star David Luiz, reports Football Insider.
Luiz has fallen out of favour of Chelsea boss Antonio Conte amidst injury problems, with the Italian opting to play a back three of Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta in his absence.
And given their performances without Luiz, the defender could find first team football hard to come by upon his return, and the Blues may choose instead to cash in on one of their most valuable assets.
Rafael Benitez – who managed the Brazilian during his Europa League winning spell at Stamford Bridge – is thought to be keen on a reunion with Luiz after the New Year, and will look to bring him on-loan to St James Park in January.
A permanent move for Luiz is very unlikely given he is likely to cost in excess of £40 million or perhaps even higher, with some suggesting the 30-year-old defender could be worth as much as €100 million given the current state of the inflated transfer market.
The Magpies fans, while thrilled, seem to think any such move for Luiz may be to good to be true …
