Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has identified targets for the January transfer window but is waiting on his budget before making any moves.

The Magpies sit just two points and two places above the relegation zone, heading into tonight’s crucial clash with Everton at St. James’ Park, where the hosts are looking to end a run of six defeats in seven matches.

Benitez has spoken to director Lee Charnley about his budget in January and expects to be given an answer by the end of the week, The Chronicle reports, with the Spaniard concerned he could miss out on prime targets if Mike Ashley does not disclose the funds available soon.

Newcastle know who they want and have options on the table, though they cannot make a move until the budget reveals who they can afford and how many new recruits he can bring to help with the fight against relegation.

A new striker, a new midfielder, a central defender and a goalkeeper are reportedly on the shortlist, as the Magpies fight for consistency.
