Newcastle United are approaching the busiest period of their season as they edge towards the New Year, where they’ll look to put an end to a slump that has seen them sit just a single point above the relegation zones.

The Magpies have lost seven of their last eight matches, only picking up points in a 2-2 draw with West Brom, and Rafael Benitez is under an immense amount of pressure to turn the tide of the season around.

Takeover talk continues to orientate around the Tyneside giants but discussions have dragged on for longer than expected, which means that Benitez may not get the funds he requires in January to bolster his side for the relegation dogfight.

Thankfully, The Chronicle claims Benitez and the club’s hierarchy have a plan of action and are prepared to pursue loan deals in the New Year if they’re unable to secure the services of players they are seeking in the New Year.

Benitez is said to be eyeing a new striker, a left-back and a ‘number ten’ in the New Year as his priority, with a number of names being widely linked by sections of the media, though it will be of interest to fans that this list does not include a new goalkeeper.

Clearly, an upgrade between the sticks is not a priority for Benitez in the new Year but that’s not to say he won’t seek a deal in this area should a target become available.
